Making your own Home-made Kajal/ Kan Mai / Kan Kappu

Applying Kajal/Kohl to eyes is an ancient practice followed by many traditions across the world. Kajal was used both as a pure cosmetic to outline and beautify the eyes as well as an important tool to introduce herbal medicines into the body easily and effectively. In fact, they say that if you want any medicine to get absorbed into your body immediately, you must either apply it on the inner eye line or keep it under the tongue. But whatever reason one may choose to wear Kajal these days, one can certainly not deny the appeal and the wonder it does to uplift/enhance your whole face. So, why not learn to make a 100% chemical-free version of this wonderful, most important beauty aid?

Here's a step by step guide about how to make your own detox kajal at home.

Ingredients:
Castor Oil, Cotton
A clay pot or plate, a clay lamp
Bringaraj Leaves OR Crepe Jasmine Flower
Optional:  Almonds (or oil) and Beeswax

Method of Preparation:
1. Extract the juice of the leaves/Flowers and soak the cotton in it. Let dry in shade andmake wicks.
2. Prepare the lamp with the castor oil. Create a stand set up with tumblers/cups of an appropriate height such that the clay pot/plate placed on them will slightly touch the wick when lit up.
3. Optionally, smear the bottom of plate/pot as well with the leaf/flower juice. Light the lamp. Let the tip of flame touch the bottom of the plate/pot. Let the flame burn for a few hours.  Soot will collect.
4. Remove the plate/pot and scrape the soot carefully into a plate/cup. Powder it well with a spoon.  Proceed to make the Kaajal as per recipe shared.  Store the Kaajal in a metal container and use every day for cooling your body, detoxing, and improving your eyesight.
